USC at The 2007 National Debate Tournament

The NDT

Just like the first National Debate Tournament (NDT), over sixty years ago, the USC Trojan Debate Squad enjoyed success in the culminating tournament of the debate season. In 2007, the Trojans finished a great season with an elite 8 (quarter-finals) finish.

The 61st annual NDT was hosted in Dallas, Texas from March 30-April 2, 2007. Teams used the 2006-2007 national topic:

Resolved: The United States Supreme Court should overrule one or more of the following decisions: Planned Parenthood v. Casey, 505 U.S. 833 (1992); Ex parte Quirin, 317 U.S. 1 (1942); U.S. v. Morrison, 529 U.S. 598 (2000); Milliken v. Bradley, 418 U.S. 717 (1974).

Teams must first qualify to compete at the NDT. Those qualifiers then compete in a four-day competition to determine the national debate champion. Each team engages in eight preliminary debates in front of three judge panels. In order to qualify for elimination rounds teams must win a majority of judges in at least five of their eight debates. Elimination rounds are a single elimination format in front of panels of between five and nine judges.

This invitation only format and use of judging panels are trademarks of the NDT since its inception and USC has been a hallmark of the event.

USC Extends Records by Qualifying

In 2007 two Trojan teams qualified for the NDT. Alex Iftimie ('07) and Michael Smith ('08) earned a first round at-large bid. Michael Jones ('09) and Chris Jones ('08) qualified through the District One regional tournament. First Round At Large Bids are awarded to the top sixteen individual teams by a national panel of coaches in recognition of their accomplishments throughout the season. These sixteen teams earn automatic qualification to the NDT.

USC's qualification ensured that they extended two national records for the NDT. USC has now qualified for the last 45 NDTs (every year since 1963) and at 56 individual NDTs. Both of these are national records unmatched by any university. Click here to see a full list of all USC teams to qualify for the NDT.

Elite 8 in 2007

In 2007 the Trojans were able to marshall a year-long work effort into success at the national championship tournament.

The USC team of Jones and Jones (below) just missed qualifying for elimination rounds after losing a closely contested decision that split the judging panel in the final preliminary debate.

Their opponent, Harvard University, parlayed this close success into an eventual quarterfinals appearance. Jones and Jones fought through a tough schedule including debating five teams who would qualify for elimination rounds. Their signature win came against a first-round at larger qualifier from Northwestern University.

The USC team of Iftimie and Smith (below) advanced to the Elite 8 after defeating three elimination round qualifiers in preliminary debates.

Their most impressive preliminary round win was a unanimous victory over the eventual national champion from Emory University.

On the strength of their preliminary performance, USC IS was seeded sixth heading into elimination rounds. Alex Iftimie was also recognized as the 15th individual speaker in his final tournament representing USC. Click here for a list of all USC debaters to earn speaker awards at the NDT.

Alex, who qualified for the NDT in each of his four years at USC has enjoyed one of the most successful careers in USC debate history.

The team defeated the University of Texas at Austin on a unanimous 5-0 decision in the first elimination round. Early the next morning the Trojans eliminated Whitman College in the Sweet 16 (Octofinals) on a 4-1 decision. USC's run was ended by a unanimous decision to the 2nd ranked team during the season from the University of Oklahoma.

USC's elite 8 performance was the best single NDT accomplishment since 1978 when Steve Combs & Jon Cassanelli made it all the way to the NDT finals. For Combs this was a back to back finals appearance.

A Great Conclusion

This tournament success was the culmination of a great deal of hard work by the entire squad. A number of Trojans joined the team in Dallas to help the team meet its goals. This success is an accomplishment for the entire Trojan family because many students, staff, faculty, alumni, and family worked and sacrificed to make these accomplishments possible. 2006-2007 will be remembered as a special season in Troy!
